Your Guide
to What’s Inside
The newspaper, in its role as the free press, serves many purposes in the community:
- A newspaper informs by supplying facts, figures, scores, prices, charts, maps, photos and illustrations.
- A newspaper educates by going beyond basic facts in the in-depth analysis of feature stories and editorials.
- A newspaper provides a print marketplace for advertisers and prospective customers.
Each day, a huge volume of information is available in the newspaper. For example:

Supplements
- Supplements are separate sections added to the newspaper to serve a special purpose. They often focus on a specific subject, such as a local event, vacation activities, etc. Often the supplements are used as an advertising vehicle, but they can just as often appear as weekend magazines or annual special sections.
If all of this material was presented haphazardly, the volume of information would be overwhelming. To facilitate easy reading, the newspaper uses many organisational strategies. For example:
- A major index
- Grouping of similar types of news into special sections/pages
- Use of headlines
- Use of a variety of type styles and sizes
- Use of columns
- Use of photographs and illustrations
- Use of cutlines, which explain photos
- Use of colour
- The structure of news stories
- Numbering of pages
- General consistency of page design
